New York Law Journal Reports Child Advocacy Clinic Victory
We previously reported here about a victory by our Child Advocacy Clinic, led by Professor Jennifer Baum, in the federal district court for the Southern District of New York. The New York Law Journal has now run a story on the win here (behind a paywall). Here’s an excerpt from the NYLJ piece:
“Indeed, given the tragic and heart-rending turbulence of her former life in Hungary, the Court concludes that she is today settled for the first time in her life,” [Judge] Engelmayer wrote. “Her acclimation and assimilation to the United States are in fact exceedingly impressive.”
The girl was represented pro bono by Jennifer Baum, a professor with the St. Vincent de Paul Legal Program’s Child Advocacy Clinic at St. John’s University School of Law, along with students Pamela Weintraub and Kristin Lee; as well as by O’Melveny & Myers lawyers Greg Jacob, Karen Koniuszy and Courtney Wen.
“It was a very, very just ruling that was really consistent, not only with the convention but with the safety and welfare of the child,” Baum said. “The court found she was sufficiently mature enough to decide for herself she wanted to stay here.”
